THREE PERSPECTIVES
THREE APPROACHES TO PHOTOGRAPHIC COMPOSITION
Kayee C (*1983 Hong Kong)
Kayee is a fine art photographer born and raised in Hong Kong, currently living in France. She creates works by assembling her self-portraits to explore human relationships. Her favourite subject is the paradox between our desire for a fusional bond and our need to remain an individual.
Gilles Lorin (*1973 Aix-en-Provence)
"Portraits of Dao" radiate infinite peace and tranquility. A lonely tree. A mountain landscape. The full moon. Almost a blessing in our fast-moving times. Gilles Lorins photographs are not loud and colorful, they do not shock, rather present themselves discreetly and with timeless elegance.
Charles Johnstone (*1952 New York)
Beginning in 2006 with his series on Havana, Johnstone has employed his signature square-format to photograph empty places which are a formal exploration of shape, pattern, color and geometry and became exemplary of his later projects in New York. Each of these series demonstrates Johnstone’s ability to find balance and structure, as well as moments of silence and loneliness in a bustling and chaotic city, such as New York.
Documentary Remnants of Memory by Charles Johnstone
Fine art photographer Charles Johnstone explores the canals and alleyways of Venice in search of a new project. A meditation on arts and crafts, Remnants of Memory celebrates the beauty of the overlooked items we pass by every day.
Johnstone's images of urban places devoid of people are great examples of the school of topographic photography, showing objects in the cityscape taking on added meaning in their solitudeIn this film, director Michael Arlen Davis portrays (2018: The Test and The Art of Thinking ) Johnstone traveling to Venice to focus his lens on newspaper kiosks. His photos then go to the prestigious design office of Martino Mardersteig in Verona, where format, typeface and layout are selected, and then to Ruggero Rigoldi's bookbindery outside Milan, which produces high quality limited edition books following a centuries-old craft.
"Remnants of Memory" takes a look at crafts and their importance today while paying homage to photography, design, craft and an increasingly rare form of bookmaking.
The film was shown at numerous film festivals and won many awards. Directed by Michael Arlen Davis
